University Prof gets Prestigious Invitation to attend World’s largest Telecoms Conference in India
Professor Gerard Parr, Chair in Telecommunications from the School of Computing Sciences at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, will be a panellist in the session on “Global 6G Programs”. This session will focus on national strategies for 6G and key areas of development. Professor Parr will join other global leaders to discuss their countries’ priorities in shaping the 6G landscape where he will highlight the work already underway with the UK-India Future Networks Initiative which he leads with partners from University College London, Southampton University, University of Surrey, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
The Telecom industry in India is the second largest in the world with a subscriber base of 1.095 Bn as of Jul 2024 (wireless + wireline subscribers).
Aside from the commercial opportunities such a market represents for UK companies, it also represents a fantastic opportunity for research collaborations between UK and Indian scientists across a range of domains.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) India plays a key role in enhancing collaboration between the UK and India. Since 2008, UKRI India has facilitated funding commitment close to £400 million between the UK, India and third parties. This collaboration supports more than 260 individual projects, funded by over 15 funding agencies, bringing together more than 220 lead institutions from the UK and India. These projects have generated more than £450 million in further funding, mainly from public bodies but also from non-profit organisations and commercial entities, attesting the relevance of these projects.
Fast and secure telecoms underpins many of these projects and with the unbridled future growth of Internet-based applications and services, advances and innovations in the hardware and software that supports fixed and wireless communications networks is extremely important.
India is due to host the world’s largest event devoted to Mobile Communications during October 2024. In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, India Mobile Congress (IMC) emerges as a beacon of innovation and collaboration. Organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI), IMC has established itself as one of the world’s most prominent technology expos. Since its inception, IMC has positioned itself as a leading forum for bringing together industry, government, academia and other ecosystem players to discuss, deliberate, demonstrate, and display the latest trends in the realm of Telecom, Media, and Technology (TMT)and ICT.
During part of the Mobile Congress there will be an International 6G Symposium which will be held on 16th-17th October 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This premier event brings together global leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the future of 6G technologies and mobile communications. It serves as a platform for exploring the latest advancements and fostering international collaboration in 6G development.
Professor Parr will also explore opportunities for future multi-lateral collaborations in the domain of Future Telecoms Networks that will look at the challenges and opportunities around increasingly integrated optical, wireless and satellite communications systems and their applications.
